Get there early. Demonstrate patience. Pack light. And, bring a book.
I remarkably respected and met all of these points. Marty dropped me off two hours before my flight. I traded in my e-ticket, passed through security and arrived at my gate in less than ten minutes. Miraculously, the flight at the gate before mine was headed to the same destination so I asked if I could board that instead of its later sibling. After checking with the other seven passengers, the desk clerk ok'd my switch and I was spared the stultifying wait. So cumulatively, 20 minutes after getting out of the car, I was snugly planted in 6B reading my book and on my way to the twin cities. Sad as it is to say, it was my best experience flying yet.
