I once read an account of one of the many sackings of Rome where a garrison of soldiers stormed into the pantheon intent on destroying it. The story went on to say that upon entering the building they froze and gazed about the interior. A commanding officer then ordered this building was to be left intact given its near perfect design and beauty. After reading this transcript, I dismissed it as historical romanticism discounting troops of this sort and purpose capable of making such an assessment.
Upon visiting the pantheon first hand, I have re-considered my earlier interpretation. I can absolutely see this structure eliciting such emotion out of anyone, especially 1700 years ago. Again we are talking about a architectural wonder whose simple but elegant nature is absolutely breath-taking, even and especially by today's standards. Seeing IS believing. |
