To close the books on the year, I thought I'd share a few of the more memorable sentiments I ran across in 2024:

You need to want what you have, not have what you want.
The Dalai Lama to the question how to get lasting satisfaction.

The thing about fitness to understand is being fit does not make you happier, being fit lowers your unhappiness.
Arthur Brooks, a happiness scholar, on how to live a richer life.

... there’s no dollar sign on a peace of mind ...
Song lyric from Chicken Fried by the Zac Brown Band

That last item caught my ear given a new personal focus I adopted in 2023—increasing my peace of mind. This campaign manifested itself in two ways:
  1. I paid close attention to the things that routinely bothered me and gave time to figuring out how to make those mental nits go away—turns out that practice is far easier than I imagined it w/could be.
  2. Before buying anything, I ask the question—will this thing increase my peace of mind. If yes, it was purchased. If no, it was not. An example of each:
    • A backup of my favorite cycling jacket that will likely get discontinued. Yes.
    • A second home/time-share in Colorado or Michigan. No.
The reason the second home fails the test is while it would be great and amazing in many, Many, MANY ways, I'm self-aware enough to know I would ceaselessly worry about it. From water leaks to local kids breaking in and partying in it, my mind would invent an endless stream of frets about my faraway abode.
The end goal of each of these practices is to increase how often I experience a peaceful mind throughout a day. The first tactic addresses things I've already let into my life. The second works to keep new worries out. I got turned onto all of this by my new literary bestie Morgan Housel, a man I hope I never meet becuase if I do, I fear I'd kiss him full on the mouth for all he has done for me.
