SCENE |
we are in the midst of a one hour sunday drive to a pumpkin farm. the kids were quiet and marty and i were talking softly between ourselves in the front seats when bella, out of nowhere, launches into the following. |
|
BELLA
dad.
TROY
yes bell.
BELLA
in case mom dies you are going to have to do some things to attract a new mom.
TROY
oh. i am?
BELLA
yes.
TROY
am i not attractive enough to entice a new mom as i am now?
BELLA
no.
TROY
would you happen to have any suggestions that might help me?
BELLA
yeah, sure.
TROY
ok. what might they be?
BELLA
well. you could spit on your hand and rub it in your hair.
TROY
ok. my hair is probably a pretty smart place to start. do i have to rub the spit all over my hair or just on parts of it?
BELLA
no, all over.
TROY
ok. and is that going to make it look better, or fix it?
BELLA
yes.
TROY
ok. is there anything else you could suggest for me to make myself more attractive to a new mom?
BELLA
you could put mud on your face.

NOTE |
i fear i'm too tired to dissect this one tonight but will say the conversation is a definite by-product of bella and marty having gone to wedding last weekend. the ceremony and ritual sparked a lengthy conversation between the girls about the laws of attraction. i don't think i'd be out of line in saying that some of marty's message seems to have gotten maimed in bella's six-year old mental mill. |
