i'll be up working. everyone else is asleep. i hear little feet hit the hardwood followed by hurried steps. it is anthony who woke up and climbed out of his crib. i push back from my desk and rush to cut him off before he gets to the bedrooms. when we meet we stop a few paces from one another, him quite bleary and wanting to pass and me highly caffeinated and blocking his route. |

anthony. what are you doing out of bed?
ANTHONY
show!
TROY
show? no show! it's the middle of the night. sleep.
ANTHONY
no! show!
TROY
not happening dude. you need to be in bed.
ANTHONY
mama!
TROY
no mama. mama's sleeping. and you should be too.
ANTHONY
numma!
TROY
no numma. mama's asleep which means numma is asleep.
ANTHONY
no!
TROY
yes!
ANTHONY
show!

no show.
ANTHONY

look outside. it's dark.
ANTHONY (intrigued)
dark?
TROY
yes dark.
ANTHONY (still curious)
dark?
TROY
yes it's dark and it's time for sleeping.
ANTHONY (resigned)

at this point i pick him up and return him to his crib which he surrenders to willingly. although, if this grudge match happens once in a night it's going to happen three more times that night. oddly each time it happens the conversation is identical, word for word, as if it didn't just happen twelve minutes earlier. drunk little kid.
