hey guys, we have a surprise for you.

BELLA (stops jumping and looks intently at marty)

MARTY
it's somewhere on the bed.

BELLA (looks around bed, pushing covers around with her feet and looking under strewn books)

MARTY
you can't see it. not just yet. (marty lifts her shirt over her stomach and rubs her slightly distended belly)

BELLA (bella claps hands on cheeks)
a baby!

MARTY
yes. a baby.

BELLA (bella runs at marty and gives her an amazingly big and deep hug)
oh mother! i was ready to have a baby.

MARTY
i know you are. you just said something about it the other day.

BELLA (now sitting up and smiling very broadly)
and(!), i'm going to begin soccer practice in two days!

TROY
alex, did you hear mom? we're going to have a baby. you're going to be a big brother.

ALEX
baby?

TROY
yes.

MARTY
yes alex, there's a baby growing inside my uterus.

ALEX (climbs down from the dresser, moves next to marty on bed and starts rubbing her exposed stomach. he then leans down and kisses is softly before resting his head on her stomach)
baby?

MARTY
yes baby. you know what we're going to call the baby while it's in my uterus?

BELLA
uhhm, sarah?

MARTY
no, sassafras.

BELLA
sassa-what?

MARTY
sassafras.

BELLA (thinking momentarily)
and when it's born will we give it a gooder name?

MARTY(laughing)
yes, when it is born we will give it a gooder name.

BELLA
